6 The Period of Feudalism - after the death of Edward the Confessor 1066 – the Witan (the council of wise men – like parliament) chose Edward´s brother-in-law, Harold, as King - William, Duke of Normandy claimed – he had been nominated by Edward (during exile) and Harold promised to support him 11th century

7 The Period of Feudalism - 1066 William, Duke of Normandy, invaded England (12000 men) – defeated the Saxon king, Harold – at the Battle of Hastings - was proclaimed King of England – became known as William the Conqueror - 1066 it was the last time a foreign enemy entered Eglish soil

10 The Period of Feudalism - Magna Carta – in 1215 King John („John Lackland“) – was forced by his barons to sign the Magna Carta - limited the absolute power of the king in favour of the barons 2.MAGNA CARTA LIBERTATUM–THE GREAT CHARTES OF LIBERTIES „No freeman shall be taken or imprisoned or dispossessed or exiled or in any way destroyed...except by the lawful judgement of his peers and the law of the land.“ -the cornerstone of democtratic rights and civil liberties 3.THE 1ST HOUSE OF COMMONS

(king of House of York) – was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 - The victor – Henry Tudor – Henry VII. – founded a new monarchy
