3 Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Is a synagogue in Westmount on Kensington St. The congregation was founded in 1846. The building was built in 1921. It is Canada’s oldest traditional synagogue

4 Shaar Hashomayim The cornerstone of the synagogue was brought to Montreal from Israel. There is also a Library and Museum attached to synagogue.

5 Inside the Synagogue There are weekly prayer services held The men and women sit separately This synagogue is known for its choir singing

6 Why is this synagogue important in Montreal? When the synagogue was founded, there were very few Jews in Canada (only 351, 181 in Montreal) Its members were from Spain, Portugal, Russia, Poland, and Eastern Europe. The synagogue was their community meeting place. The synagogue also has a strong connection to the state of Israel.
