7 Duty #3: To be knowledgeable about the Chapter’s constitution and by-laws, and to ensure that each officer and committee member is familiar with his or her duties. 8 8 THE ROLE OF THE CHAPTER VICE PRESIDENT The Vice President is responsible for assisting the President in coordinating and directing chapter operations and committee activities, and acting in the absence of the president in fulfilling the duties and responsibilities outlined for the chapter president. 12 Post cards – limited space Personal letters – time consuming and expensive Email Newsletters – expensive - reach all members, can be posted on VFC website Telephone, social media - text message, facebook, twitter

13 Pros and cons of electronic newsletters PROS Saves chapter money Delivery on time No limit to size of newsletter Can produce area newsletter CONS Unable to reach members without computers Email addresses must be kept current Time consuming on part of newsletter editor 13

14 14 The number one reason people say they don't volunteer is because "no one asked." Asking doesn't mean a newsletter ad that says "new officers needed." It requires a personal approach, and it works best if you have a specific task in mind: "Betty, we need help with our Alzheimer Committee ticket sale and raffle, could you give some time to help?“ Volunteers are busy people. Be sure to thank them for their efforts.

15 15 Use people's talents, not just their time. Not many people will get excited about constantly being on the cleanup committee. But if you let the person who is artistic decorate for the holiday luncheon or the one who's interested in graphic design create your newsletter, they're much more likely to do a great job and want to continue. " How did that go for you?" Check in with volunteers occasionally. Make sure their needs are being met and they haven't become disgruntled. Personal contact lets them know you care about them individually, and it catches potential problems before they become significant.
