2 In Western Europe, trains are used to travel rapidly between countries. In France, trains can reach speeds of 180 miles per hour! Great Britain has a 32 mile long tunnel under the ocean that connects France and England. It is called the “Chunnel”

5 People in Europe travel frequently to the culture centers of the region. They travel for many reasons: –To find jobs –To go to school –To enjoy museums, restaurants, and stores

6 The Cultures of Western Europe Western European cities are a blend of the old and new. Buildings from the Middle Ages can be seen alongside modern buildings. Each city in Western Europe is unique and offers its own special characteristics.

7 The Cultures of Western Europe Paris, France is known for its art exhibits, museums, and shopping. London, England is known for its beautiful scenery and great parks. Madrid, Spain is known for its friendly people. Berlin, Germany is known for its cultural festivals such as Oktoberfest.

8 The Cultures of Western Europe Most of Western Europe is considered prosperous or wealthy. This prosperity is based on industry. Factories make goods that are in great demand around the world. Some of the products made include steel, cars, and machines.

9 The Cultures of Western Europe About 200 years ago, Western Europe’s economy was based on farming. After the Industrial Revolution many machines were invented that could do the farm work more efficiently.

10 The Cultures of Western Europe This increase in machinery put many people out of work. Many people began to move out of rural areas and into cities to look for work. As more factories were built and more workers found jobs, the cities became wealthier.

11 The Cultures of Western Europe This growth in cities is known as Since World War II, many people have moved into Western Europe. These immigrants make up about 6% of the workforce in the area.

12 The Cultures of Western Europe Immigrants bring new cultures to the area. Many of the things that immigrants bring to their new home are new: –Languages –Religious Beliefs –Customs

13 The Cultures of Western Europe Immigrants often change the culture of the area. As people of different cultures live together the characteristics of the cultures blend. This blending of cultures is called

14 The Cultures of Western Europe The ease of travel and cultures between the countries of Western Europe has allowed the area to become very prosperous. The region has created an organization called the European Union (EU) to continue this growth.

15 The Cultures of Western Europe The EU works at expanding trade in Western Europe by: –Ending tariffs or fees charged for goods entering the countries. –Creating a “united” currency or money similar to the United States called the Euro.
