2. When we use l’imperfetto  “was/were doing”  Used to do  Time in past tense - Erano le otto. /Era l’una. - It was eight./ It was one.  Age in past tense - Avevo cinque anni. - I was five years old.

3. When we use l’imperfetto  Weather expressions - Faceva bel tempo./ Pioveva. - It was nice out./ It was raining.  Habit in the past - uses “each/ every”  “ogni” - Quando ero giovane, visitavo i nonni ogni domenica. - When I was young, I used to visit my grandparents every Sunday.

4. When we use l’imperfetto  Continuous or unfinished action in the past (being general- we don’t know when the action started or ended) - I bambini giocavano a calcio. - Faceva caldo nella scuola.

5. What does it look like? Chop off –re and add endings: -vo-vamo -vi-vate -va-vano

12. Which one?  When 2 continuous actions are happening together, both use the imperfect. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~   2 actions happening together usually use the word “while”  “mentre” or “when”  “quando”

13. Esempi  Mentre camminavo a scuola, parlavo con la mia amica.  Ascoltavo la musica mentre facevo i compiti.  Quando l’aereo partiva, diventavo nervosa.

14. Interruptions  When an action is interrupted by another action, the one that interrupts uses pass. pross. ~~~~~l-----l  Interruptions also can use “quando”

15. Esempi  Facevo i compiti quando mio fratello è entrato nella mia camera.  Mangiavo la pizza quando il mio bicchiere è caduto!  Parlavo con Antonio quando mia mamma è arrivata.  Puliva la cucina quando i ragazzi sono partiti per scuola.

16. Reflessivi  Remember reflexives? (vestirsi, svegliarsi, farsi….)  Those can be put into the imperfect, too! Esempi: Mi facevo una doccia Si vestiva Ci preparavamo per uscire Si mettevano le calze

Words often used with imperfect Ogni – every Sempre – always/all the time Di solito – normally il sabato / di sabato, la domenica/di domenica- every Saturday, every Sunday, etc. Mentre – while (simultaneous actions – 2 imperfect verbs going on at once) Quando – when (pass. pross. verb interrupts imperfect verb) Quando – when (pass. pross. verb interrupts imperfect verb)
