3. ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will learn and understand the war more in depth. They will learn about important events, dates, and world leaders. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to understand the causes of WWII Students will be able to understand what led the United States to enter the war. Process/Skills: Students will be able to research information about WWII Students will be able to create a report on one important event of WWII Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to form opinions on events that happened in during WWII and connect it to their lives.

The world as we know it could be completely different if WWII ended a different way. This lesson will teach students the importance of WWII and its affect on us. 6. Students will research information on WWII. Who was involved in the war? When did the war begin? When did the US become involved in the war? What side did the US join? How did the war end? Resources: Computers, paper and pencils. Objective

7. Intuitive

8. Students will be given a topic about WWII. They will first be broken into groups of four. The topics are United States Internment Camps, Pearl Harbor, Dropping Atomic Bomb, and Concentration Camps. I will show a clip from youtube about their topic and the students will write about how they felt during the videos. The students will first explain how they feel about the topic. Then they will research their topic more in depth. They will write how they feel about the topic after learning more about it. They will then create a poster board to show to the class so they can get a better understanding of the topic. 10. Positive/Strengths Students will learn the positive outcomes of the war. Using the same groups they created they will research the positive outcomes of the war. Topic include; advancement of technology, growth of economy, opportunities for women, and US becoming a superpower. Groups will be presenting the material to the class and teaching about them about their topic using power point. Resources: Computers, paper, pencils.

11. Negatives/Weaknesses

12. Students will debate whether it was a good idea or not to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. The class will be broken up into two groups and they will have to come up with evidence or ideas on why it is was a good or bad idea to have dropped the bomb on Japan. Citing evidence from the text and research will be most effective during the debate. The debate will last the whole class period. Resources: Computer Negatives/Weaknesses

14. Creative Students will create a paragraph about how the world would be different if the outcome of the war was changed. They can be as creative as possible for the teacher will only be looking to see if certain topics are address, such as the United States would not be a superpower or they will be under Nazi rule.

16. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned though out the lessons. They will create a short report on how the world we live in now has been partially shaped around the outcomes of WWII. Use evidence to connect themes to now and back then.
