Agree Disagree  Sociologists closely study group dynamics and their functions in society

Agree Disagree  There are few or no informal interactions in formal organizations

Agree Disagree  Although formal organizations are dominated by formal interactions, informal interactions have a strong influence on these organizations as well

Interactions  Most roles require interactions  Interactions help stabilize social structure  Promote change

Common Types of Interactions  Exchange  Competition  Conflict  Cooperation  Accommodation

Exchange  Interact for a reward or return of actions  Occur daily  Most basic and common interaction  Reciprocity- if you do something for someone, that person owes you something in return  Rewards could be material or nonmaterial  Exchange theory: people are motivated by self interest; only take certain actions for rewards

Competition  Two or more people or groups oppose each other to achieve a goal that only one can attain  Common in Western culture  If rules followed, can be positive motivation  Can lead to conflict or stress

Conflict  Deliberate attempt to control by force, oppose, or harm  Goal= defeating opponent  Few rules  4 sources = wars, disagreements within groups, legal disputes, and clashes of ideology  Can have positive outcomes

Cooperation  Two or more people or groups work together to achieve a goal that will benefit more than one person  Get tasks done with all people working together

Accommodation  State of balance between cooperation and conflict  Give a little, take a little  Multiple forms:  Compromise – two parties give up something  Truce – halt to conflict until compromise is met  Mediation – 3 rd party advisor to reach agreement  Arbitration – 3 rd party makes decision for both parties
