1
Earthquakes HOW IS IT MEASURED?
2
Instrument located at or near the earth’s surface to record seismic waves. (Tool) SEISMOGRAPH
3
Tracing of the of earthquake motion created by a seismograph. (Data) SESMOGRAM
4
1.Collect several seismograph readings from several locations 2.Place on a time distance graph 3.Graphing dime and distance S-P METHOD
5
After creating the S-P Time Method begin triangulation Using at least 3 seismograph readings Draw a circle around the seismographs. Using the radius of the circle to equal the distance from the seismograph to the epicenter. Draw 3 circles for each seismograph reading Where all 3 circles intersect is the location of the epicenter TRIANGULATION
6
Magnitude means strength Measures strength of an Earthquake by ground motion When magnitude increases by 1unit the ground motion becomes 10 times larger RICHTER MAGNITUDE SCALE
7
Intensity-Measures the degree of which people felt the earthquake and the a mount of damage created The closer to the EQ the higher the intensity and the further away the lower the intensity. MODIFIED MERCALLI SCALE
