State Events 2015 State Championships Sites

State events are a significant point of emphasis for staff during the 2015-16 school year. It is important to understand there are many considerations when selecting sites State Events

State event selection is based on: The type of experience desired as reflected in the most recent Strategic Plan (“Big Time” atmosphere) Willingness of sites to host Availability of host sites Site’s ability to meet state event facilities requirements Willingness and experience of event directors Cost State Events

Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, staff recommends pursuing the following options regarding state events. State Events

Baseball/Softball/Soccer/Lacrosse Staff recommends – Keep current Jubilee set-up Rationale – The Jubilee format creates an exciting atmosphere for all participants, while minimizing costs (personnel, security, rental fees) associated with a state event. The League benefits from better media coverage by having multiple sports in the same area. State Events

Team Golf / Girls Open Golf Staff recommends – Explore multi-year relationships with golf courses that have demonstrated a desire to host VHSL tournaments. Provide a process for rotation based on classification’s geography. State Events

Swim and Dive Staff recommends – Two event sites with a rotation among three facilities to geographically balance travel State Events

Indoor Track Staff recommends – 2 sites – 1A-4A and 5A-6A State Events

Outdoor Track Staff recommends – 3 sites, two classifications per site 1A-2A at Radford 3A-4A at Harrisonburg 5A-6A at Todd Stadium Among alternate sites that will be considered – Hampton University, James Madison University, SportsBackers Stadium (Richmond) State Events

Wrestling Staff recommends – 2 sites, 3 classifications per site 1A-3A at Salem Civic Center 4A-6A at The Scope or Robinson? Alternate sites will be considered that can match the VHSL state event timeline State Events

Football Staff recommends – 3 sites, 2 games per site (Saturday Doubleheader) 1A-2A sites include Salem, William & Mary, JMU, Liberty, Richmond 3A-4A sites include Liberty, Salem, William and Mary, JMU, Richmond, UVA, Va. Tech 5A-6A sites include UVA, Richmond, William and Mary, ODU, Todd Stadium Other sites will be considered as appropriate State Events

Cheerleading Staff recommends – Single site – like Siegel Center State Events

Volleyball Staff recommends – Semifinals at school sites and Finals at a single site – like Siegel Center Alternatives Other equivalent facility State Events

Cross Country Staff recommends – Single site – like Great Meadow Alternatives Other equivalent facility State Events

Field Hockey Staff recommends – Single site – Like Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach Requirements – 2 fields; lights; turf State Events

Basketball Staff recommends – Quarterfinals at Supersites; semis and finals at one site. Alternatives – Facilities that can host on dates consistent with the VHSL calendar and of similar nature to current championships held at the Siegel Center. State Events

Gymnastics Staff recommends – High school rotation Rationale – University/Civic facility would be cost prohibitive Tennis Staff recommends – Keep some connection w/Jubilee Alternatives – Identify facilities that can host (6 courts per gender per class needed); secure best facility at lowest cost. State Events

Forensics Staff recommends – Clover Hill High School Rationale – Free except for custodial costs Media Staff recommends – Fredericksburg, Richmond, Roanoke Alternatives – Pending partnership site in Richmond State Events

Theatre Staff recommends – 1A-4A – Monticello High School – free except for custodial costs; central location 5A-6A – Dickinson Center – reasonable rental; central location Debate Staff recommends – Liberty University or like facility State Events

Film Staff recommends – VCU or like facility that has some connection to film Scholastic Bowl Staff recommends – William & Mary or like facility State Events

Next Steps VHSL staff plans to meet with potential Virginia host localities and their interested community participants. This meeting will serve to: Better market our championships Secure great sites that are economically beneficial to the League and those communities. Build deeper community relationships within the VHSL footprint State Events
