3. AAU/ARL/ANUL Project Sign up with ARL to join the AAU/ARL/ANUL Project. You do not have to be an ARL member library to join Your library will be able to receive copies of articles or book chapters from over 60 Japanese libraries at very low fees Holdings information in NII Webcat (not OCLC or RLIN). Use a blank workform to generate requests and supply OCLC symbol to send through OCLC The next phase will extend the project to lending books as well Currently 32 member libraries in N.A.

4. NDL Intl. ILL/DD Service Your library can sign up to borrow books or receive photocopies from the National Diet Library Individuals may also register to purchase photocopies from NDL Requests can be done online using the NDL- OPAC. Payments may be made using Intl. Postal Reply Coupons or money orders. Credit card payments a future option

What You Need to Know Easiest to request through OCLC if you belong to OCLC because of holdings info, automatic forms, and ease of payment ANUL project requires you or your faculty to verify holdings. Your ILL staff aren’t likely to read Japanese. They need to trust that you know how to check holdings A (free) subscription to NACSIS-IR provides a very convenient way to do research and check holdings at the same time

I have prepared instructions for faculty/librarians on how to verify holdings in Webcat and fill out requests -> AskEASL My colleague, Kathryn Ridenour, has prepared instructions for ILL staff on how to send requests to Japan ->AskEASL Most requests can be filled through either OCLC OR ANUL projects NDL is more expensive, but wonderful as a last resort or for someone who doesn’t want to go through his/her library

7. What you must do Talk to your ILL staff: explain to them the benefits of the project and how little extra work it will create because you or your faculty will be able to verify holdings Have your ILL staff set up an automated referral message for items that they cannot verify. This gives you a chance to check holdings and citations, in case of errors, and minimize unfilled requests

8. And then … Train your faculty and students Show them how to use NACSIS-IR, NII Webcat, and the NDL-OPAC Explain to them that if they can find a citation, we can find a holding library Explain the way to fill out requests to minimize confusion Distribute user guides so that they have clear instructions near their computers And wait for the cheers!
