The Old Man and the Sea The Old Man and the Sea is a epic story about the fight between an old man named Santiago and his fight with a large marlin. After 3 days he catches the marlin, but fails to bring any of the meat in because of the sharks ate it all

Major Themes Pride Success Heroism

Pride Pride is shown in the Old Man in the Sea when: He travels far to sea to catch the fish He is still fishing as an old man and doesn’t give up in 85 days with no fish He feels sympathy for the fish when the sharks destroy it and his pride makes him think he shouldn’t have even caught the fish

Success Santiago hasn’t had much success lately in the novel (84 days), but he remains hopeful He catches the big fish a finds himself successful and feels very accomplished He is sad that his success is so short-lived as the sharks take the meat off of the fish, so he can not sell the fish at market

Heroism Santiago is a hero to Manolin because he has taught Manolin all he knows about fishing Santiago has heroic strength to continue 3 days without stopping, and end up catching the fish
