When Light Bends
2
Refraction is when waves speed up or slow down due to travelling in a different direction. A medium is something that waves will travel through. When an object is placed in water it looks like this:
3
In this case the light rays are Slowed down by the water and are bent, causing the object to look odd. The two mediums in this example are air and water
5
Angle of Incidence the Angle of Refraction!
6
In air light travels in a straight line When light enters another material it seems to bend.
7
A wagon changes direction when travelling at an angle from pavement onto sand because one front wheel slows down while the other wheels continue moving at a higher speed
8
The bending or change in direction of light when it travels from one medium into another. The Syrup bends the light more
10
____________
11
1. The incident ray, refracted ray, and normal all lie on the same plane. 2. Light bends ___________the normal when the speed of light in the 2 nd medium is less than the speed of light in the 1 st medium. (Light bends ___________ from the normal when the speed of light in the 2 nd medium is greater than the speed of light in the 1 st medium.
12
A spoon in a glass of water appears bent when viewed from above. Light from the part of the spoon below the surface of the water must changes mediums from water to air before reaching the eye, this causes the light to bend (refract)
13
The speed of light decreases as the light rays travel from the air into the water This bends the rays ___________
14
This causes a virtual light source as the spoon isn’t actually bent We view the spoon as being slightly off from where the real spoon actually lies.
15
... Why the people on survivor seem to have such difficulty catching fish?
16
We think light rays travel in a straight line so we assume the fish is higher because that is where the light rays ________________. The fish is actually lower because ________________________. into our eyes when it exits the water and enter the air normal
17
The Apparent Depth is ________________
19
Some materials (such as translucent glass, water) Reflect light as well as refract light. That is why there is some reflection but you can also see through it!
20
If a special film is added to the surface it allows for some incident rays to be refracted, but much of the incident rays are also reflected. This leads to a two-way mirror (i.e. mirrored sunglasses)
