Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 5–3) Main Idea Example 1:Write and Evaluate Algebraic Expressions Example 2:Write and Evaluate Algebraic Expressions

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will evaluate algebraic expressions.

Example 1 Write and Evaluate Algebraic Expressions Words Variable Expression y years less than 5 Let y represent how many years less. 5 – y Meera’s age is y years less than 5. Write an expression. In this case, the words less than mean subtraction.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 B. 10 – d C. 10d The amount of money Shira has is d dollars less than 10. Write an expression. A. – 10 d D. 10 + d

Example 2 Write and Evaluate Algebraic Expressions Words Variable Expression half as many colors as Omar Let c represent the number of colors Omar used. c ÷ 2 Amarella used half as many colors as Omar on her poster. If Omar used 8 colors, how many did Amarella use? In this case, half as many means to divide by 2.

Example 2 Write and Evaluate Algebraic Expressions c ÷ 2 Write the expression. 8 ÷ 2 Replace c with 8. 4 Divide 8 by 2. Answer: So, Amarella used 4 colors on her poster.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A.5 grapes B.7 grapes C.11 grapes D.14 grapes Wilma ate half as many grapes as Lucy. If Lucy ate 14 grapes, how many did Wilma eat?

Resources Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 5–3) Image Bank Math Tool Chest Multiplication Expressions

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Five Minute Check 1 (over Lesson 5–3) A.14 B.15 C.16 D.17 Evaluate 3x if x = 5.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Five Minute Check 2 (over Lesson 5–3) A.18 B.19 C.20 D.21 Evaluate 2y if y = 9.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Five Minute Check 3 (over Lesson 5–3) A.60 B.61 C.62 D.63 Evaluate 7y if y = 9.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Five Minute Check 4 (over Lesson 5–3) A.5 + n; 10 eggs B.3 + n; 8 eggs C.5n; 15 eggs D.3n; 15 eggs Write an expression. Then evaluate it. Bill made n omelets. Each omelet requires 3 eggs. If n = 5, how many eggs did Bill use?
