1 Evaluating Expressions

2 Variables In math we use symbols (called variables) to represents numbers that we do not know. Symbols are usually letters such as x or y What does the word variable sound like to you?

3 Term What does the word term mean to you?
Where have you seen this word in other subjects? Ex: English – a single word that can be defined How might we model this in mathematics? A single number, letter, or combination of both. Ex: 6, 5, x, z, 6y, 5x, 4z

4 Expressions What does the word expression mean?
Discuss what an algebraic expression might look like. A single number, letter, term or the product of those separated by a + or -. Is their a time an expression can also be a term? Examples: 6n, 52x, 5y 6+n, x-5, x-y

5 Evaluate What does evaluate mean?
What are some non-math examples of evaluating? How might we evaluate a math problem? Substitute a specific value for each variable and then perform the operation.
