4 Vocabulary Evaluate To find the value of an expression. Good to Know!
Some algebraic expressions will have more than one variable. If this is the case, you will replace each variable with a given number. After replacing the variable, or variables, with numbers, you will use the order of operations to find the value of the expression. The value of an algebraic expression changes depending on the value of the variable.

5 Evaluating an Expression
Rewrite the expression by replacing the variable(s) with the given value(s). Follow the order of operations to find the value of the expression.

6 Example 1 Evaluate each algebraic expression. a. p + 4 when p = 7 Rewrite the expression with p + 4  in the place of p. Compute the value of the = 11 expression.

7 Example 1 Continued… Evaluate each algebraic expression. b. 9x when x = 3 Rewrite the expression with 9x  9(3) 3 for x. Compute the value of the 9(3) = 27 expression.

8 Example 1 Continued… Evaluate the algebraic expression. c. when y = 24 Substitute 24 for y. Use the order of operations = 9 to evaluate.

9 Example 2 Evaluate the algebraic expression when x = 3, y = 10 and z = 5. a. 4x − y Substitute 3 for x and 10 for y. 4x − y  4(3) − 10 Evaluate using the order of 4(3) − 10 = 12 − 10 = 2 operations.

10 Example 2 Continued… Evaluate the algebraic expression when x = 3, y = 10 and z = 5. b. Substitute 10 for y, 5 for z and 3 for x. Use the order of operations to evaluate.

11 Good to Know! Different values can be substituted for the variable in an expression. A table is used to organize mathematical computations. The substituted values are called input values.

12 Example 3 Shari’s Taxi Service charges customers an initial fee of $5 plus $0.50 per mile driven for each ride. The algebraic expression representing this fee is m, where m is the total number of miles driven during one ride. Use a table to show how much rides of 6 miles, 15 miles and 24 miles would cost Shari’s Customers. Miles Driven Cost ($ m) 6 (6) = = $8.00 15 (15) = = $12.50 24 (24) = = $17.00
