2 Anaphora  The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of a clause.  Poets use the device to emphasize an idea’s importance.

3 Subculture  A smaller subsection of a culture; for example, the artsy students area subculture within the culture of a high school.

4 On your Target Diagram...  Consider several subcultures for each ring.  Think about your experiences as members of each subculture.  Identify images or ideas that reflect each subculture and write those words or draw those images in the appropriate ring.

5 While I read…  Mark the text by:  Underlining images Lyon uses to show where and what she is from.  Circle diction related to her culture  and descriptive details showing the reader her culture.

6 In your Journal…  What can you infer, conclusions can you draw, about the speaker’s culture from her diction and descriptive details?  Look at the poems structure, how do the stanzas represent types of information?  How does the repetition of “I am from” create momentum, or movement (shifts), in the poem?  Be prepared to share!

7 Revisit the target diagram  Highlight two or three images or symbols that are significant to you.  In your journal Free Write on the significance of these images and use details, diction, and figurative language to describe aspects of your own culture.

8 Now it’s your turn!  Looking at your target diagram and the writing you just did, draft a “Where I’m From” poem copying Lyon’s poetic style.  Be sure to include:  4 stanzas  25 lines minimum (30 max)  Anaphora: “I’m From”  Details, Diction, Figurative Language from your own experiences.
