4/30/14Class notes - How do you buy stocks? – Many different stock markets around the world where you can buy, sell, and trade stocks. – 2 major markets in the U.S. NYSE New York Stock Exchange Buy company stock using stock brokers – People who sell/trade stocks in person. – Pro: someone you can talk to about which stocks to buy – Con: brokers charge a fee for their service NASDAQ National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations Buy company stock electronically – Pro: you can buy/sell stocks yourself on computer at any time – Con: no one to talk to for advice on stocks.

4/30/14 Class notes – How do you know which companies to invest in? industry: A category of business activity Examples: Auto manufacturing industry (Ford, Toyota, etc.) Processed & packaged goods industry (General Mills, many other food companies) Textile industry (clothing, shoes, etc.) **You can search for top-performing companies by industry.

Market Capitalization (Market cap) – One way to measure a company’s size & net worth (total worth) – Calculated by: Cost of one share X # of total shares – Higher market cap means company earns more $$ Example: – Sony Corporation (SNE) – produces PlaySation 3 – Price of one share of Sony stock = $18.71 – # of Sony stocks available = about 1.04 billion – Market Cap = $19.51 billion
