6 Student Activities  Students are to create a persuasive letter to Hitler –Address Germany’s concerns towards his actions –Offer alternate solutions to the economic problems –Explain the potential outcome of his actions

7 Student Activities (cont’d)  Students are to Create a Timeline –Should begin with Germany’s loss in World War I –Should end with Germany’s defeat in World War II –Must include 15 important events minimum

8 Other Student Activities  In class lecture notes –Printed with Important Words Missing  Forces them to Pay Attention to Lecture  In class worksheets –Should accompany text  Watch movie “Hitler” –Get idea of how Hitler’s beliefs came to be  Webquest –Students will obtain information by accessing the Internet and finding credible sources

9 The Holocaust  Germany was left in ruin after World War I –Reparations imposed that left country economically unstable –Opened door for persuasive leader to come to power  Adolf Hitler felt that the war was lost because of Jews –Mother died under the care of a Jewish nurse

10 The Holocaust  Economic Troubles –Government In Debt due to War –Hitler played on the fear of no hope –Instituted programs to get people employed  KdF- “Kraft durch Freude” took care of leisure time  German Labour Front

12 The Holocaust  Hitler headed up the Nazi party –Became Chancellor in 1933 –Began putting those who opposed him into concentration camps  Had his secret police terrorize opponents –The Gestapo

14 The Holocaust  Hitler’s ability to pull the country out of economic hardship made people believe in him –People were willing to listen to him  Called Germans the Master race –Blue eyed and blond hair though his was dark  Resulted in the extermination of approximately 6 million Jews –Hitler’s terror not limited to Jewish genocide

16  Most “popular” method of extermination was the gas chamber –Though many died from malnutrition and neglect –Many were placed in forced labor camps  Devastated many European Jewish communities –Many emigrated to the U.S. –Jews longed for a place they could call their home land –Creation of Israel

18 The Aftermath  Germany divided into East and West –Berlin also divided and separated by Berlin Wall –Beginning of Cold War  U.S. and Soviet Union  Germany watched very closely –Try to prevent same scenario from occuring
