2 Job Description/Traits Required Diagnose with technology, manage, and treat hearing and balance issues for patients of all ages Hearing Issues: Includes fitting, prescribing, and teaching of the use and maintenance of hearing aids Performs surgeries and implants Provide hearing and speech rehabilitation services Train future audiologists Provide information to the Government and Industry on: Environmental concerns Noise creating hearing loss Recommend hearing protection Traits required Patience, ability to concentrate, and attention to detail

3 Work Setting Work Conditions Wide range of environments Hospitals Clinics Various schools and universities Research agencies Corporations Private or group practice No demanding physical labor Most work 40-50 hours per week

4 Education 8 years for a doctoral degree, must at least have a masters or equivalent degree to be an audiologist Undergraduate recommendations Strong arts and sciences Linguistics, phonetics, psychology, speech and hearing, mathematics, biological sciences, and physical and social sciences. Between 275 to 375 hours of surveyed clinical practice 9 months of supervised professional experience Closely connected to the speech-language pathology field Some Audiologists become certified in that field

5 Education Continued Most audiologists become doctors (AuD), though additional degrees include: PhD ScD Must graduate from a certified university Must be licensed to practice audiology

6 Wages, Benefits, and Outlook Wages $52,000-$90,000 OR Median pay of $51,470 Outlook Excellent OR good Benefits can include Paid holidays Paid vacations Health Insurance Retirement plans

7 Personal Assessment Sounds great Most often can fix patient’s hearing and balance ailments Nobody will die Will be able to see and appreciate the effects of your work Sounds not so great I would assume that audiologists must be interested in hearing and therefore language and communication Communication and language do not interest me
