2 Greece’s Golden Age

3 Today’s Vocabulary Democracy – Gov’t in which all citizens participate in day-to-day activities. Socrates – Encouraged Greeks to question; sentenced to death for “corruption of the youth” and “neglecting the gods.” Alexander the Great – Conquered the Persian empire therefore creating Hellenistic culture.

4 Pericles Led Athens during its golden age. Had 3 main goals: – To strengthen Democracy Pay gov’t officials – To strengthen the empire – To glorify Athens

5 Art and Architecture The Parthenon – 23,000 square feet – Built to honor Athena Sculptors aimed to create figures that were strong, and perfectly formed

6 Drama and History Types of Greek drama: – Tragedy: Focused on human suffering. – Sophocles wrote Antigone – Euripides wrote Medea – Comedy Humor that often made fun of the gov’t. Began keeping historical records. – Herodotus Began accurately recording events. – Thucydides Believed that events recurred over time.

7 The Olympics Sporting events were held to honor the gods – Olympics was held every 4 years Mount Olympus – Home of the gods

8 Philosophers Socrates – Encouraged Greeks to question. – Often got on people’s nerves so he was put on trial. Plato – Didn’t like democracy – Believed philosophers should rule the gov’t Aristotle – Use of questioning led to the development of the scientific method.

9 Peloponnesian War Sparta declared war on Athens – Athens has better navy Sparta is too far inland to attack by sea – Sparta has better army Able to march into Athens Plague strikes Athens Sparta wins

10 Macedonian Power King Philip II of Macedonia takes power over Greece – Dies before he can take over Persia.

11 Alexander Defeats Persia Alexander, Phillip’s son, takes over and continues his fathers conquest of Persia. Even though he was outnumbered, Alexander attacked Persia and wins the lands west of the Euphrates River. – Still wants to conquer the rest of the Persian empire. Able to conquer land all the to India. – Didn’t continue further b/c of low moral among soldiers. Alexander dies at the age of 32.

12 Alexander’s Legacy Alexander adopted many Persian ways and created a new culture. He also spread Greek culture.

13 Hellenistic Culture Greek, Egyptian, Persian and Indian cultures blended together to form the Hellenistic culture. Alexandria, Egypt becomes the center of trade. Attractions: – Lighthouse – Museum – Library

14 Science & Technology Astronomers said the sun was the center of the universe and estimated Earth’s size. Mathematicians created geometry, pi, and pullies.

15 Philosophy & Art Philosophers encouraged social unity and harmony of the body and mind. Sculptures honored gods and heroes.

16 Reflection What were the greatest accomplishments of the Greeks?

In you essay, answer the following questions. – What does this quote mean? – Do you agree or disagree with this quote? Why? – What does it mean to participate in representative government? – What are the different ways citizens can participate? – What are advantages and disadvantages to participating? – What would happen if citizens did not participate? – How important is it to participate in representative government?
