Macedonian King - Philip II ► ► Built a superb army ► ► Macedonian conquest of Greece followed the weakening defenses during the Peloponnesian War.

How did he built? Bribery, threats, diplomacy, and alliances In 338 Athens and Thebes joined forces against him, he defeated them at the Battle of Chaeronea. Now all Greece came under his control. He dreamed to conquer the Persian Empire. Assassinated at his daughter’s wedding.

Alexander the Great ► ► Philip’s son – came to power at age 20. Olympias, the wife of Philip, outmaneuvered his other wives and children to put her son on the throne. ► ► Experienced soldier who shared his father’s ambitions. By 334B.C. he had enough ships to cross the Dardanelles, the strait separating Europe from Asia Minor.

Alexander and his Victories First victory against the Persians at the Granicus River.

Alexander’s Empire Moved from victory to victory, marching through Asia Minor into Palestine an south to Egypt. In 331 B.C. he took Babylon then seized the capitals of Persian capitals. He established an empire from Greece to Egypt and the margins of India. Spread Hellenistic influences throughout his vast empire. (Blend of Greek and oriental elements and was influenced by trade).

Death Died of a sudden fever and said he left his empire to the Strongest. 3 generals divided the empire into Macedonia and Greece (went to one general), Egypt to another, and most of Persia (Syria) to a third.

Impact of the Conquest Alexander the Great adopted Greek culture and spread Hellenistic influences throughout his vast empire. His conquest led to the Hellenistic Age during which: Blend of Greek and oriental elements occurred. Spread of Hellenistic culture through trade took place.
