Using Context Clues
2
What are Context Clues? When you see a word that you have never heard or used before, don’t panic – use your clues. There are context clues : - Within the sentence the word is used. - Before the sentence the word is used, - Even after the word is used
3
What Does it Take? - Inferences - Inferences are educated guesses based on your prior knowledge and the text you are reading. - PK+T=Inference
4
You already do this You make inferences all the time. ex. “I hear sirens and see a fire truck…there must be a fire.” - “Her nose is red, and she has a horse voice…she must have a cold.” - So why not make inferences when you read?

Let’s Start As I walked into the waiting room, I was greeted by coughing and sneezes. “Do you have your insurance card or what?” asked the receptionist. Where am I?
6
Now let’s make inferences to determine a specific word… My sister has always been a huge baby. Even though she’s ten years old, she still cries and cries every time she doesn’t get her way. Yesterday, for instance, she wanted a bite of my Snickers bar. So, when I didn’t give her a bite of my Snickers bar she started bawling her brains out. As much as I wanted to teach her a lesson, I was so tired, and she was so annoying that I acquiesced and gave her a bite of the darn candy bar.
