How Far/How Fast
2
What are some important questions that you formed about your journey to the moon? List 2 or 3 of the most important things you need to figure out before you go.
3
One of the questions yesterday was how long the Lunar mission would take. This question is very important in planning for supplies like food and fuel. Distance vs. Speed The distance to the Moon will not change, so in order to shorten the trip, we have to travel faster.
4
Get out your calculators. The distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,000 km. The scientists at NASA designed the Apollo rockets to travel 5700 km per hour. How long will it take you to get there? 67.37 hours. Just over 67 hours. There are other things to consider too. Time in Earth orbit to prepare to head to the Moon. Travel time from Earth orbit to the Moon. Time spent on the Moon. Time spent traveling back.
5
It took Apollo astronauts about 2 hours to take off from Cape Canaveral in Florida and complete their preparations for travel to the Moon while in Earth “Parking Orbit.” They then fired their rockets for their trip to the Moon and navigated into Moon orbit for the duration of their stay. Rockets were fired again for their return to Earth and the “Splashdown” landing.
6
Think about the time to travel 384,000 km each way, parking orbit time and time on the Moon for your work. How long should you plan your trip for? Write this in your journals. Share your answers. Do the trip times seem reasonable? 67 there and 67 back, plus 2 hour parking orbit is how many days? Just over 5 and a half. How long do you want to work on the Moon? Remember, you will have to transport food and materials for the length of your stay. Now watch second 20 minutes of “For All Mankind.”
