1 Applied Algebra B Lesson: 4 – 2 Counting Outcomes Objective: Learn to use tree diagrams and the Fundamental Counting Principle to count outcomes.

2 Baroness Martine de Beausoleil was a French scientist in the 17 th century who spent 30 years studying geology and mathematics. She determined which rocks were valuable by the minerals they contained. Some other ways to classify rocks are by their texture and color. How many different rocks are possible having characteristics shown in the table?

3 Tree diagram A diagram used to show the total number of possible outcomes of an event.

4 How many ways possible? 16 different Rocks possible.

5 Terms Outcome One possible result of a probability event. 16 different rocks Sample Space The list of all possible outcomes for an event. The list of characteristics is your sample space.

6 The Greenwood Dance Company has three lead female dancers, Teresa, Kendra, and Angelica, and two lead male dancers, Keith and Jamal. How many different ways can the director choose one female dancer and one male dancer to lead the next production. 6 different ways that the dancers can be paired up.

7 The Ice Cream Parlor offers the choices below for making sundaes. Draw a tree diagram to find the number of different sundaes that can be made.

10 Fundamental Counting Principle If an event M can occur in m ways and is followed by even N that can occur in n ways, then the event M followed by even N can occur in m(n) ways.

11 How many different kinds of school sweatshirts are possible. Outcomes = 3(2)(5) = 6(5) = 30 There are 30 different sweatshirts possible.

12 Catina wants to buy a red sweatshirt in size large or 1X in any style. How many choices does she have. Outcomes = 3(1)(2) = 6 She has 6 different choices.
