Department of Justice What we’re doing Reviewing the Tasmanian Building Regulatory Framework to ensure only the regulation which is still relevant to Tasmania today and into the future remains part of the framework.

Department of Justice What’s included? The Building Act 2000 The Building Regulations 2004 and the Plumbing Regulations 2004 The Housing Indemnity Act 1992 The Occupational Licensing Act 2005 The Architects Act 1929

Department of Justice continued… The Building and Construction Industry Security of Payments Act 2009 The Resource Management and Planning Appeals Tribunal Act 1993 The Fire Service Act 1979

Department of Justice What we’ve done so far Met with stakeholder groups in April 2014 to develop an issues paper: –Consumer Reference Group –Building Practitioners Reference Group –Industry Reference Group –Local Government Reference Group –Building Regulation Advisory Council

Department of Justice continued… Issues paper distributed for public comment July 2014 53 submissions received from a range of stakeholders Submissions used to identify a number of options and recommendations Position Paper developed

Department of Justice continued... Position paper currently with the Treasurer (who is also Minister for Building) Further meetings with stakeholder groups planned for 26 and 27 November Planning to release Position paper for public comment end of November

Department of Justice What happens next? Public responses will be open until end of January 2015 Responses will be collated and final recommendation made to Treasurer Draft legislation expected to be tabled by April 2015
