Bellwork 9-3-15 Open your scientist notebook and add this to the table of contents: #6 Bioengineering Vocabulary pg. 13

Objectives SPI 0707.T/E.1 How does technology respond to social, political and economic needs? SPI 0707.T/E.3 Can I compare the intended benefits with the unintended consequences of a new technology? SPI 0707.T/E.4 Am I able to describe, explain, and develop adaptive and assistive bioengineered technology?

Yours Textbook Technology Technology refers to the products and processes that are designed to serve our needs; tools and methods for creating these products and processes. Examples: computer, pencil, toilet

YoursTextbook Engineering The process of creating technology. Examples: designing and building a robot; designing and creating a cell phone

YoursTextbook Bioengineering Applying engineering to living things, such as humans and plants Examples: eye glasses, drought- resistant plants, and vaccines

Bioengineered Corn Scientists have inserted into corn a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thurigiensis, usually referred to as BT. The gene makes a protein lethal to certain caterpillars that destroy corn plants. This form of insect control has two advantages: It reduces the need for chemical pesticides, and the BT protein, which is present in the plant in very low concentrations, has no affect on humans.

Yours Textbook Adaptive Bioengineering Engineering that results in a product or process that changes living organisms Examples: Altering DNA and artificial (fake) skin

Yours Textbook Assistive Bioengineering Engineering that results in a product or process that helps living organisms but does not change them permanently Examples: contact lenses and crutches

3-2-1 Exit Ticket 3 Things I Learned about Technology and Engineering 2 Examples of Technology 1 difference between Assistive and Adaptive Bioengineering
