President Wilson and the New Freedom Pres. Roosevelt wanted to regulate (set rules) on business, President Wilson wanted to break up monopolies SS Standard 11.2.9 Students analyze the effect of political programs and activities of the Progressives Objective 1: Following the footsteps of Teddy Roosevelt, identify 3 Progressive Era laws created by President Wilson that still have an impact on American lives today

President Woodrow Wilson- born in the South during reconstruction (prejudice, Christian), Pres. Of Princeton Univ. (smart), *He was a reformer who enacted key progressive legislation (RULES) that we still have today –Clayton Anti-Trust Act- declared certain business practices illegal (such as monopolies) and legalized labor unions *Importance- unions were now allowed to strike, picket, boycott, and collect money –Carlos Slim of Mexico is the richest man in the world because he owns all of the telephone services in Mexico. Explain if that is fair to the people of Mexico? Explain why this is not true in the US today?

Taxes- before Wilson Gov. raised most of it’s money through tariffs (tax on an imported good) –Problem- monopolies used tariffs to prevent competition in business 16th Amendment (1913) set up a graduated income tax (larger incomes are taxed at a higher % than lower incomes) –*Importance- income tax is how Gov. raises most of it’s money today Besides raising money for the Government ($3-4 Trillion a year), what other purposes do taxes have to help America’s economy (think circulation)? Who do you think contributes the most money in taxes?

What is a dollar valuable? Isn’t just paper? Federal Reserve System- divided the nation into 12 districts, each district can PRINT IT’S OWN MONEY –*Importance- allowed each area of the country to have access to $ (not just financial centers/ cities-NYC) –Importance- Fed. Controls the amount of money available (not too much or too little) giving the dollar value What would happen if there was too much money? Or too little?

Voting Rights for Women- by 1910 only men had the right to vote in federal elections (white, black, and immigrants) –Susan B. Anthony- leader of the woman’s suffragist movement Suffrage- right to vote –19th Amendment- (1919) gave women the right to vote Notice that women earned the right to vote after WWI, a war that Wilson said was a “War for Democracy”. Can you analyze what was hypocritical about Wilson’s statement and why America finally let women vote in 1919 based on this statement.

Civil Rights- one area that Wilson and progressives did not push for reform –*No laws were made to stop segregation, lynching, even after blacks voted for Wilson Jim Crow Laws/ Segregation- laws that separated blacks and whites (schools, hospitals, transportation) *Plessy vs. Ferguson- court case that legalized segregation as long as “separate but equal” facilities were available for both races

Booker T. Washington- leading Af/Am. Civil rights leader, wanted blacks to learn skills and have financial security before demanding equal rights –Tuskegee Institute- college founded to teach Af/Am. vocational skills BTW did not want Af/Ams to challenge whites WEB Dubois- 1 st Af/Am. to earn Doctoral degree from Harvard, demanded immediate equality for African/Americans –Talented Tenth- wanted top 10% of Af/Am.s to be highly educated as doctors, lawyers, and businessmen –NAACP- founded by Dubois and white benefactors to support Af/Am education and defend rights in court Who do you feel had the better civil rights strategy for African/Americans at the turn of the century?
