Microclimate Fieldwork@HCI 2i2 Damian Ho (6) Josh Ryan Chan (2) Kieran Yeo (11) Weng Pei He (23)

Methodology Dates: 18/1 11:20am & 4/2 11:20am Instrument used: Electronic measuring device Readings taken: 2 temperature readings taken per location, one at 15 cm and one at 1.5 meters above ground. Readings taken at 7 locations for each day. Hypothesis: Open areas are warmer than enclosed areas

Locations A: Top floor of the Multistory Carpark B: Garden outside the printing centre C: Open space between canteen and Block C D: Terraces, on the middle row E: Field, at the flag poles F: Running Track, at 100m start line G: Fountain area outside the General Office

Day 1 ClosedOpen

Day 2 Closed Open

Average

Analysis  Our hypothesis is that open areas are warmer. It was mostly accepted  It was mostly accepted as open areas had a higher average temperature than enclosed areas.  However, some of the open areas of each day had a generally cooler temperature as compared to the enclosed areas.  Therefore, results are inconclusive.

Cont.  This may be due to a range of factors. For example:  The temperature at the areas were measured at different times.  Thus, in between measurements factors such as cloud cover and wind speed may have changed, affecting the data  Therefore, it is hard to ensure that the data is reliable.

Problems faced  When we were measuring the temperature at different places, the reading was often unsteady and would fluctuate, making it difficult to take an accurate reading.  The cloud cover would vary between readings, therefore making it hard to record reliable readings.

Reflections 3 things I know better about this topic: 1. Factors affecting Temperature 2. Factors affecting wind speed 3. How measurements should be made 2 Questions I would like to find out more about: 1. How exactly do these factors affect areas? 2. Are the factors inter-related?

Thank you For your kind attention
