Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, or asteroid impacts. How tsunamis are caused
3
Tsunamis are huge waves that can be over 50ft tall. Tsunamis are a series of enormous waves that happen when the ocean is rapidly displaced. Tsunami waves are much longer than common ocean waves.

Scientists use seismographs to measure seismic waves. Seismic waves are the waves of vibration generated by earthquakes. By analyzing seismic waves, scientists can determine when and where an undersea earthquake has occurred and calculate its strength. Another measure uses pressure sensors placed on the ocean floor. When a sensor detects pressure from a large tsunami, it relays the information to a buoy. The buoy then transmits the data to a warning center. Scientists are also developing methods to detect tsunamis using radar signals from satellites.

Tsunamis cause millions of dollars in damage. In December 2004, at least 216,000 people died in the Tsunami in Sumatra.
