REMOTE CONTROL ROBOT WITH HUMAN ARTICULATION Justin Wells Dept. of Technology, CET

2 OUTLINE Need for remote control robots needed Types of possible configurations Possible user interfaces Problems with designs

3 MOTIVATION Market exists for commercial remote control robots Human form robot that is capable of human movement but has robotic strength It would be cool

4 INTRODUCTION Across many industries the ability to remotely control robots effectively could get human lives out of harms way Possible application range from hazardous waste disposal to military combat

5 PROBLEM STATEMENT A robotic that can be controlled remotely by an operator for handling hazardous waste or moving heavy objects in a confined or dangerous space is not yet commercially available

6 PROPOSED SOLUTION A lightweight robot that can be transported anywhere quickly but still be sturdy and low maintenance The ability to be in a human form will allow the machine to interact with an environment designed for humans but will keep operator out of harms way.

7 RESULTS Getting full human articulation reliably out of a machine is hard to do, especially in the hands. Attempted to us accelerometers worn in harness to control robot Due to how these work, the longer you use the system the more errors occur in the positioning of the robot being controlled. Ideal solution will be a harness utilizing potentiometers to get exact readings on the position of the operator This merely means that more sensors will be required to get full reading on the movements and position of the operator

8 CONCLUSIONS Through testing using accelerometers, I have found that they are not ideal in this type of application. Due to financial constraints I was unable to complete the project for this presentation, however with enough funds this can result in a working prototype.

9 FUTURE WORK Possibly utilizing a motion capture system like that used in the film industry utilizing infrared sensors might make operator interface easier to maintain but raise overall cost of system. Contact Email: justinwells@gmail.com
