1
How do we divide with EXPONENTS??
2
It does not take magic…BUT- Let’s try and discover the RULE for dividing exponents??? Let’s try something new!!
3
HERE WE GO!!
4
Remember….
5
Work with a partner. Use these examples to discover the Property for Divison of Exponents Work these with your partner… the same way we did the last one….
6
Make a CHART: EquationEXP in numerator EXP in denominator EXP in answer
7
REMEMBER….
8
So…. Which we learned earlier is the same as: Do you see a pattern yet?????
9
Dividing with Exponents
10
If you still have not figured out the rule, look at the exponents in the original problems and compare them to the exponents in the answer. Is there a relationship between them?
12
It looks like we need to SUBTRACT the exponent in the denominator from the exponent of the same base in the numerator. So what is our new rule for DIVISION OF EXPONENTS???
13
Quotient of Powers Property To divide powers that have the same base, subtract the exponents. BUT…..
14
Example
15
Try these: 123123 456456
16
Power of a Quotient Property To find a power of a quotient, find the power of the numerator and the power of the denominator and then divide. BUT…..
17
Example
18
Try these: 123123 456456
19
Simplify the expression:
20
Try this! Think about everything you know about multiplying and dividing with exponents…
