They have added fat and or sugar. “WHOA” foods often satisfy our sense for sweet and salty foods and should be eaten in moderation (once in a while). Students need to understand portion sizes and food groups. Draw attention to the fact that fruits and vegetables should now make up half of each meal. Grains and Protein are the other half with Dairy being a supplement to the meal. Use the following language to teach this concept: “Make half your plate fruits and vegetables” “Make at least half your grains whole” “Vary your protein” “Switch to skim or 1% milk” 2 6/11/2015

Why is it important to drink water? Drink water so that you do not get dehydrated. Dehydration = Your body does not have enough water to keep it working right Talk about the “Foods to Reduce” (“WHOA” foods) using these two statements: “Drink water instead of sugary drinks” “Decrease the sodium (salt) in your food choices” Water is not considered a food. It is necessary for proper bodily functions, but it does not nourish you with vital nutrients like proteins, fats, or carbohydrates that provide calories for the energy our bodies need.
