CRIS and repositories: NARCIS Elly Dijk KNAW Research Information EuroCRIS meeting, Moscow (Rusland), 9 October 2008
2
Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Academy's mission: To ensure the quality of scientific research in the Netherlands to promote the open accessibility of scientific information Mission of my Department: national focal point of research information
3
WWW.NARCIS.INFO National Academic Research and Collaborations Information System
4
Outline Academic Information Domain - AID Situation in the Netherlands: CRIS, OAR and e-Data Dutch scientific portal NARCIS Digital Author Identifier – DAI Joining CRIS, OAR and e-data: problems The future Conclusions
5
Academic Information Domain: CRIS and repositories CRIS: Research Descriptions, Researchers, Institutions Repositories Full-text publications E-Research: datasets
6
Schema of the Academic Information Domain Academic Information Domain Personnel Information Domain Financial Information Domain Repositories CRIS- CERIF E-Research H.R.Finan. Based on:
7
Current Research Information System Every university and the Academy has it’s own CRIS: Metis Content: Researchers: expertise, research data and workplaces Research Institutions: Profiles and Addresses Research Programmes and Projects Bibliographical information on research results, like articles CRIS
8
Open Access Repositories National DARE programme – Digital Academic Repositories Better access to the results of publicly funded research in the Netherlands By development of institutional repositories: universities, Academy, National Research Council, smaller research institutes Coordinated by SURFFoundation Repositories
9
E-data The universities don’t have e-research repositories Researchers don’t take good care of their research data Keep information in their computer Don’t take care of long-term preservation Don’t like to share their data But we do have E-DATA Institute DANS -Data Archiving and Networked Services E-research
10
DANS Data Archiving and Networked Services EASY – Electronic Archiving System Data themselves available under the conditions specified by the depositor Humanities and Social Sciences E-research
11
Dutch Academic Information Domain Ideal situation
12
NARCIS (Daffodil): Dutch Scientific Portal
13
Components of NARCIS Dutch Research Database – NOD: 14 academic CRISs and other research institutes Central Access Point to 21 Open Access Repositories - OARs Subsections: Cream of Science and Promise of Science E-DATA: DANS developed OAI interface on EASY – Electronic Archiving System
14
Based on: SURFFoundation Metis (university) eDepot (KB) repositories NARCIS (KNAW) NOD (KNAW) F-system (university) P-system (university) Research Council NWO E-data Research institutes
15
Joining the three components
16
Digital Author Identifier - DAI Needed: link between Author and DAI Enables integration of systems Avoids name ambiguity and variants
17
Implementation of DAI Dublin Core not sufficient Introduction of (stripped) MODS in DIDL Co-operation of all Dutch universities, KNAW and NWO National database hosted by OCLC 40,000 unique author names with DAI’s
19
DAI in action
21
Content of NARCIS OARs : Over 160,000 full-text publications (of which 20,000 doctoral e-theses) DANS: More than 2,000 datasets Dutch Research Database: Expert database: 10,000 researchers Portal of Professors and associate professors: 7,500 names About 36,000 names of researchers Project descriptions of current (20,000 records) and completed research projects (22,000 records) About 3,200 records of university or non-university research institutes
22
Joining CRIS, OAR and e-data: problems Technical barriers are not the main point Organizational issues Willingness To assign DAI’s To fill the CRISs, OARs en E-research repositories To introduce new exchange formats like (stripped) MODS
23
The Future Publication lists: harvesting of the “bibliographic only records” DAI makes it possible to develop tag clouds Enhanced publications for the international DRIVER project - Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research Metadata store (NARCIS becomes a National Repository)
24
Conclusions It is possible to create a Dutch Academic Information Domain even when the systems are not connected To create a Dutch AID the greatest challenges are organizational Need for integration on some level: Digital Author Identifier But live would be much easier with well connected and filled systems, based on CERIF!
