8 Prompt: What makes Australia a unique place in the world? Use information from the text to support your answer. AUSTRALIA Australia is the largest island in the world. It is the smallest continent in the world, and the sixth largest country in the world. It is also the flattest continent in the world. It is thought that the first humans came to Australia 42,000 to 48,000 years ago. These people crossed on land bridges that have since disappeared or by short sea-crossings. In the 1600’s European sailors began to visit Australia. Europeans began to settle in Australia in the 1700’s. There are now about 22 million people in Australia. About 60% of the people live in five capital cities. (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide). Australia is a very old country. It has some unique plants and animals. Many of the animals are not found anywhere else. Kangaroos, koalas, emus, platypus, kookaburras, and dingoes only live in Australia. Australia also has the greatest number of reptiles of any country (755 species). It also has the most venomous snakes in the world. Australia is a unique country.

Orchard Hills Elementary Orchard Hills is an Elementary School in Novi. There are about 427 students in grades kindergarten to fourth grade at Orchard Hills. There are many teachers at Orchard Hills. The Principal is Mr. LePlae. Orchard Hills was built in 1958. Over the years new buildings have been added. It is a nice, modern school. Students at Orchard Hills have fun things to do. Last week, Destination Book Fair came to the school. There were many great books for the students to see and buy. In summer, the students can go to a week-long camp; “Camp Invention”, where they do many hands on things. The students also have a skating night. They also do special things to learn. They do Coolmath; an amusement park of math and more. They read National Geographic for Kids and learn about the world. There is even a Book Buddies program where students read with adults. Orchard Hills students exercise more than their brains. They have a great physical education program where they can use a climbing wall. They also get to learn music and become artists. Orchard Hills is a fun place to learn.
