3
Introduction For great many users, current best-match text- retrieval systems leave much to be desired. review of results They devised a visualization centered around a content-displaying scrollbar and color term highlighting.
4
Introduction(Cont.) Visualization for Document Retrieval VQ: the query alone VQDB: the query in relation to the database VQR: the query in relation to individual retrieved documents VRR: the retrieved documents in relation to each other
5
Introduction(Cont.) IR researchers have proposed many VQR’s. document lens TileBars Their single bars for term contributions to document score They feel that seeing term locations in an overview is not that helpful.(TileBars)
7
A Different Scrollbar The visualization has: Occurrences of each different word in the query and its variants are highlighted in a different color. The vertical scrollbar contains small icons in the same color. An area at the bottom of the window contains a legend relating the words and colors.
8
A Different Scrollbar(Cont.) The idea is to help the user find as quickly as possible the parts of the documents that are most likely to be relevant.
10
Future Work & Conclusion Like many visualization, theirs does not scale well in all respects. It is difficult to distinguish more than about 5 colors. - larger icons - cluster the query terms
11
Future Work & Conclusion(Cont.) It is not limited to showing only the results of search. Displaying indications of document content in scrollbars in whatever form has great potential to make programs of many types easier to use.
