6 Changing your Default Home Page Go to the menu bar and select Tools Drop down and select Internet Options You will see this page:

8 Type in the homepage you choose into the address bar, highlighted in yellow Your homepage can be any web page out there. If you change your mind you can come back and change it again.

9 Changing your default Home Page Once you have typed in the URL, click Apply, and then OK

11 Scroll Bar The areas highlighted in yellow are scroll bars:

12 Scroll Bar To scroll up and down, click and drag on the slider.

13 Hyperlinks A hyperlink is either a URL, a word or set of words, usually underlined and in a contrasting color from the rest of the text. Ex. Click Here When you click on a link you are connected to another website. You can return to where you were by using the back button.

14 The Web Address (URL)

15 What is a URL? URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator A URL is also called a web address. If you know the web address, you can re-frequent any page you find on the Internet.

16 The URL and the Address Bar The address highlighted above in the Address Bar is the same as the typing: http://my.yahoo.com

17 Anatomy of a URL http://my.yahoo.com and http:// www. learnthenet.com /english/ start.htm are both examples of web addresses / URLs. The following explanation is based on URL #2 because it is longer and has more components.

18 Anatomy of a URL http:// www. learnthenet.com /english/ start.htm http:// Short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, this indicates a hypertext document or directory.

19 Anatomy of a URL http:// www. learnthenet.com /english/ start.htm www. This indicates a page on the World Wide Web. (Sometimes "www" is missing.)

20 Anatomy of a URL http:// www. learnthenet.com /english/ start.htm learnthenet.com/ Called the domain name, it often tells you the name of a company, university, or organization. It can also tell you the country of origin.

21 Anatomy of a URL http:// www. learnthenet.com /english/ start.htm www.learnthenet.com/ Together, these indicate the web server name.

22 Anatomy of a URL http:// www. learnthenet.com /english/ start.htm english/ This is directory or folder on the web server that contains a group of related web pages within the website.

23 Anatomy of a URL http:// www. learnthenet.com /english/ start.htm start.htm This is a web page inside the folder. (The same file can be named start.html) A URL doesn't always include the name of the web page.
