Rosa Parks On December 1 st 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa age 42 refused to give up her seat for a white passenger Parks action sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and her act of defiance became an important symbol of the modern Civil Rights movement

Harriet Tubman After escaping from slavery into which she was born she made 13 missions to rescue over 70 slaves using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad When the far reaching United States Fugitive Slave Law passed in 1850 she helped guide fugitive farther north into Canada and helped newly freed slaves find work

Madame C.J. Walker Her fortune was made by developing and marketing a hugely successful line of beauty and hair products for black women While living in St. Louis she joined St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal Church which helped develop her speaking interpersonal and organization skills

Booker.T. Washington Booker was an African American educator, orator, author and a dominant leader of the nation’s African American community from the 1890s to his death Encouraged by Mrs.Ruffner (his teacher), young Booker attended school and learned to read and write
