The Ordinary World Fish out of Water Special need, flaw or defect Willing to sacrifice personal needs for a cause Universal characteristics Flaw may be internal or external Variety of heroes (tragic, anti-hero, loner)

Call to Adventure Problem or a challenge Raise the stakes (what is the worst possible thing that could happen) Audience empathy

Refusal of the Call Hesitation or failure Change of circumstances May be a result of personal history

Meeting the Mentor Wise old man False mentor Drill sergeant, wizard, old-timer, etc. Mentor usually trains the hero Gives advice Limited interaction

Crossing the First Threshold Into the special world Point of no return Usually relates to the original call to adventure Plot point 1

Tests, Allies, and Enemies New challenges Obstacles smaller than the supreme ordeal Allies and enemies make themselves known Learn the rules of the special world Character development Love interest

The Inmost Cave Object of the quest is hidden here Faces the antagonist or obstacles head-on Hero faces his fears

Supreme Ordeal Preceding stages lead to this The most dangerous place or the worst possible situation All seems lost and then… Result is feeling of elation or exhilaration Life or Death moment Not yet the climax of the film, there will be one more test
