CELL STRUCTURE & FUNCTION: An Introduction Despite the diversity of organisms in our world, they all possess cells. Cells are open systems that carry out all chemical reactions essential to life. Cells are made up of the four organic polymer groups we just studied.
5
History & The Cell Theory
6
Robert Hooke 1665 published his “tiny drawings” based on his observations made w/ his compound microscope, the most famous was that of thin slices of cork (=dead plant) oak tree bark Noticed that the organized subunits looked like the “cells” of a monastery.
7
Anton van Leeuweenhoek Read Hooke’s book Micrographia Skilled at building microscopes that magnified over 200X In 1673, described microbes living in pond water
8
1840s Schleiden (botanist): “All plants are made of cells.” Schwann (zoologist): “All animals are made up of cells.” Siebold “Microbes were made up of cells— specifically just one.”

10
Virchow German pathologist in 1850s "every cell originates from another existing cell like it.” Thought all diseases caused by host cells that did not work properly.
11
Semmelweiss Hungarian doctor who noticed that a doctor who cut himself on a scalpel from an infected patient ended up dying from the same disease. Father of anitseptics: advised doctors to wash their hands to prevent carrying disease from patient to patient.
13
Louis Pasteur Verified Virchow’s idea by showing that microbes did not spontaneous emerge from nutrient broth; Plus they cause infectious disease.
14
The Cell Theory 1.All organisms are composed of cells.+ 2.Cells are the structural and functional unit of all life. 3.All cells come from pre-existing cells.* *Where did the first cells come from? +What about viruses?
