University-Industry Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer in the Open Innovation Framework Antero Kutvonen Janne Lehenkari Mika Kautonen Irina Savitskaya Juha Tuunainen Reetta Muhonen The 2013 University-Industry Interaction Conference, Amsterdam 27.-29.05.2013
2
Introduction −Exploring the intersection of open innovation and university-industry collaboration −Focus on the ‘reverse’ direction of knowledge transfer, from firms to universities −Simplified systematic literature review
3
Systematic literature review
4
University-industry links The different forms of knowledge transfer between universities and external actors. Cf. Perkmann et al 2012; Salter & Martin 2001; Abreu et al. 2009.
5
Commercialization of research, formal and informal collaboration −IPR commercialization and entrepreneurial academics are still not common ( D’Este & Patel 2007) −Motives are mainly non-pecuniary (D’Este & Perkmann 2011; Bozeman et al. 2013) −All modes of commercial collaboration show significant industry and national differences −Research focused on transferring university knowledge to firms, although reciprocity is acknowledged & seems higher in informal links
6
The open innovation framework −OI as a framework for organizing and managing boundary spanning knowledge flows −Universities represent a special case of OI coupled modes of open innovation highlighted −The few studies coupling OI and UII emphasize relational links (Perkmann & Walsh, 2007, Levy et al., 2009) −Open questions: matching processes; strategies, organizing and managing collaborations; and the role of national innovation system (West et al., 2006; Perkmann & Walsh, 2007)
7
Publication analysis
8
Conclusions −Emphasis on bi-directional knowledge transfer and use of open innovation concept increased strongly in the last five years −Open innovation used mainly as an ’umbrella’ −Universities as utilizers of firm-based knowledge is a rare, but valuable viewpoint −Insights from academic literature on open innovation is a valuable viewpoint to expand understanding in knowledge transfer
