3 Technologies used in KM practices Web 2.0  A WWW technology that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web.  Web 2.0 is a Ajax-enabled (asynchronous JavaScript and XML) Web-based application which allows users to create much more interactive applications. Open source development  Internet-based communities of software developers who voluntarily collaborate in order to develop software that they or their organizations need. Virtual worlds  Allow users to build three-dimensional immersive virtual worlds where individuals represented by avatars socialize, explore, and conduct business. 5 Web 2.0 applications Blogs  Online journals or diaries hosted on a Web site. Collective intelligence  A system that attempts to tap the expertise of a group rather than an individual to make decisions, e.g., collaborative publishing or common database for sharing knowledge. Mash-ups  an aggregation of content from different online sources to create a new service, e.g., Google map. Peer-to-peer networking  A technique to efficiently sharing files including music, videos, or text either over the Internet or within a closed set of users. Online games  Massive multiplayer games which involve thousands of people interact simultaneously though personal avatars in online worlds. Podcasts  are audio or video recordings- a multimedia form of a blog or other content, e.g., iTunes. RSS (Really Simple Syndication)  Allows people to subscribe to online distributions of news, blogs, podcasts or other information. Social networking  Systems that allow a user to build an online profile and interact with a group of online users. Widgets  Programs that allow access from users’ desktops to Web-based content.
