2 Stephen Fuller Austin ◦ Stephen F. Austin went on his journey to colonize Texas. ◦ He knew that families wanted to begin a new life in this rich land. He knew that he could help because he was good at working with people and writing contracts. Austin felt that he had an important job doing this for the good of the people. Through hard work and skillful leadership, ◦ Austin helped more than 1,500 families settle in Texas.

3 OLD THREE HUNDRED The name Old Three Hundred is sometimes used to refer to the settlers who received land grants in Stephen F. Austin 's first In January 1821 Austin's father, Moses Austin, had received a permit from the Spanish to settle 300 families in Texas, but he died in Missouri a short time later before he could realize his plans. Stephen F. Austin took his father's place and traveled to San Antonio, where he met with the Spanish governor Antonio María Martínez, who acknowledged him as his father's successor. 4 Father of Texas Today, Texans remember Stephan F. Austin as the “Father of Texas” This means Austin did more that anyone else to create the Texas we know today. That is why the capital of Texas was named Austin.

5 Empresario ◦ An empresario was a land agent that brought new settlers to populate Texas. ◦ Empresario Stephen F. Austin convinced the Mexican government to allow settler from the United States to come to Mexico. ◦ Settlers came to Austin’s colony on foot, by horse, in covered wagons, or on flatboats and ships to farm cheap land near the Colorado and Brazos Rivers.

6 Texas Revolution ◦ American settlers were tired of living by Mexican rules and decided to separate from Mexico to make their own rules and laws. ◦ Mexico then passed a law to stop immigration to Texas in 1830 and were required to pay taxes to the Mexican government. ◦ Stephen G. Austin was sent to prison and the Americans in Texas rebelled against Texas causing the Texas Revolution.

8 CAUSES OF THE TEXAS REVOLUTION: Santa Anna did not respect the rights of Mexican citizens. Santa Anna sent troops to Texas in 1835. Santa Anna had Stephen Austin arrested.
