3 Your Resources Resources = things you use to achieve your goals Everyone has resources 3

4 Human Resources Human resources = knowledge, skills, imagination, energy, time, family, and friends Easiest to use because they are with you at all times 4

5 Knowledge Includes everything you have observed, learned and remembered Did you drive to school, how did you do that? Did you make breakfast, snack or lunch? 5

6 Skills Physical or mental You can draw, paint, wood work You can do math, science experiments and problem solve 6

7 Imagination Creativity Working through a problem or conversation in your imagination 7

8 FYI Humans are not alone in using imagination to solve problems. In labs, chimps can figure out how to use a stick or stand on boxes to get bananas out of reach Humans, however, have considerable ability to solve problems and make decisions 8

9 Energy Power to get things done Comes from food we eat, exercise and rest 9

10 Time Have things to do in a day How do you get them done? How much planning does it take? 10

11 Family & Friends Call on those resources of those close to you They can offer time and knowledge 11

12 Material Resources Material resources = physical objects you can use to accomplish your goals Possessions of yours are those you own Some last a long time and others are shorter Some allow you to use the resources to use other resources (money) 12

13 Money Money has taken many different forms throughout the years. Soldiers in the Roman Empire were paid with bocks of a salt On the Pacific Island of Yap, huge stone disks once served as money 13

14 Community Resources Community resources = people, facilities, and organizations that help you enjoy life, improve your skills and solve your problems 14

15 Teachers expand your knowledge School counselors help in handling problems Businesses offer opportunities for jobs and paychecks 15

16 Natural Resources Natural resources = air, water, soil, plants, animals, minerals, and sources of mechanical energy 16

17 For the environment we need to use our resources wisely Conserve or save where possible Avoid pollution (introduction of dirt and poison in environment) 17

18 More than half the trash collected in the Unite States is paper Paper is made from a renewable resource—trees When you recycle we conserve trees and don’t fill up landfills 18

19 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Created by the U.S. government in 1970 to enforce clean-air and water laws Pressure from EPA led to banning of aerosol sprays which damage the Earth’s atmosphere 19

21 FYI The Industrial Revolution, which swept the developed world during the 19 th century was in part a massive attempt to manage and organize manufacturing Allowed items to be produced more quickly and effeciently 21

22 Ann’s day seems a constant battle with time. She has trouble waking up in the morning, so she eats little breakfast and is often later for school. As she falls farther behind schedule, she tends to forget commitments. Today she was to busy to fix dinner for her family and had to buy a prepared meal from the supermarket deli. What is Ann’s poor management costing her? 22

23 Good managers are well organized Poor managers may not be so organized – Things misplaced, lost, commitments forgotten – Recognizing a problem is the first step for correction 23

24 Management Process Best way to find use for your resources in order to achieve your goals Giving you a grasp of what your goals are 24

25 Planning Assess the situation – Write down what you want to accomplish Develop a task list – Expand on goals, don’t leave anything out Identify your resources – Write down all resources you might need Decide on your priorities – Evaluate and determine goals 25

26 Organizing Develop schedule – How much time it will take for tasks – Develop sequence (charts) Assemble the needed resources – Check any equipment, talk w/friends on plan Prepare to act – Act it out – Back up plan = just in case 26

27 Implementing Put the plan into action – Follow task list according to schedule Monitor the plan and your progress – Take time to evaluate progress – Improvise if necessary – On paper everything usually looks great, reality is different 27

28 Evaluating Evaluate the plan – Did you accomplish your goal? – Was the back up plan adequate? Evaluate your performance – Did you follow your own plan? – You are then in control of your plans and not others 28

29 FYI In the early 20 th century. Frank and Lillian Gilbreath became famous for their time and motion studies. They began an industrial consulting firm to show companies how to manage industry better. Their work became famous when 2 of their children, Frank and Ernestine, wrote a book called Cheaper by the Dozen, describing their experiences growing up as subjects for their parents’ management experiments. The book inspired the movies of the same name. 29
