2 Culture Defined The sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people from another. Culture is transmitted, through language, material objects, ritual, institutions, and art, from one generation to the next.

3 Examples of USA Culture Melting pot, Salad bowl (1960’s) Media (News, Nickelodeon, Facebook, HBO, etc.) Religion (Christian, Islam, Roman Catholic, etc.) Dance, Theatre, Art, Architecture Science, Technology, Govt., Econ., Folklore, Demographics, Customs

4 Subcultures a group of people within a culture that differentiates itself from the parent culture to which it belongs, often maintaining some of its founding principles. Examples: Goth, Scientology, myspace, trekkies, Hippies, Juggalo, Jock, Band Nerd, Vampires, Emo,

5 Assignment List a U.S. Culture or Subculture at the top of a sheet of paper explain the 5 W’s about that Culture or Subculture Who, What, When, Where, Why Be sure you can teach the Culture or Subculture’s beliefs, traditions, etc. to the class.
