Climate: North Sudan = hot, dry climate, South Sudan = tropical climate. Climate is changing in Sudan since the 1970s. The country is suffering from severe drought. Desertification (the spreading of desert like conditions) is increasing especially in Sahel regions of the country. Population growth: 2/3 of the population live in/around the capital city Khartoum. This causes overpopulation around the city area but under population in rural areas. Overpopulation causes problems such as: Food shortages Demand for land Soil erosion Famine Wars Muslim Arabs in North v Black Christians in the South Drought forced farmers to move south = increased tension 1983 Government passed Islamic laws that further angered Christians = Civil war + new war in Darfur
