Earth’s Water Ch 1 Section 2

Atoms Smallest particle of an element that has the characteristics of that element (basic building block of all matter). Example : H: Hydrogen O: Oxygen

Element A substance made up of only one kind of atom. Example : - Ag (Silver) - Al (Aluminum)

Polar Molecules A molecule that has electrically charged areas Example: H 2 O

Water Molecule 2 Hydrogen (H 2 ) + Oxygen (O) = H 2 O

Marshmallow Molecules Create a H 2 O molecule, using the marshmallows and toothpicks provided. On Page 2 in your Properties of Water Notes #1  Draw the water molecule  Color the water molecule  Label the water molecule

Water: A Polar Substance Hydrogen: Slight Positive Charge (+) Oxygen: Slight Negative Charge (-) -

Water “sticks” together The positive end of a water molecule attracts the negative end of a nearby molecule and as a result the water molecules “stick” together

Notice how the molecules are attracted to the oppositely charged regions of a nearby water molecule

Water Drawing

Polar Molecules Molecules which have electrically charged areas
