Earth’s Water Ch 1 Section 2
2
Atoms Smallest particle of an element that has the characteristics of that element (basic building block of all matter). Example : H: Hydrogen O: Oxygen
3
Element A substance made up of only one kind of atom. Example : - Ag (Silver) - Al (Aluminum)
4
Polar Molecules A molecule that has electrically charged areas Example: H 2 O
5
Water Molecule 2 Hydrogen (H 2 ) + Oxygen (O) = H 2 O
6
Marshmallow Molecules Create a H 2 O molecule, using the marshmallows and toothpicks provided. On Page 2 in your Properties of Water Notes #1 Draw the water molecule Color the water molecule Label the water molecule
7
Water: A Polar Substance Hydrogen: Slight Positive Charge (+) Oxygen: Slight Negative Charge (-) -
8
Water “sticks” together The positive end of a water molecule attracts the negative end of a nearby molecule and as a result the water molecules “stick” together
9
Notice how the molecules are attracted to the oppositely charged regions of a nearby water molecule
10
Water Drawing
11
