3 Name of the unit.......................... What we already know... What are we going to learn... How are we going to learn it... What questions might you ask in this topic? What important terminology will there be in this topic... AQA B3.3 Controlling internal conditions – Joe Ewen, Rebecca Timms and Rebecca Bartlett (Cheney School)

4 Name of the unit B3.3 Homeostasis What we already know... What are we going to learn... How are we going to learn it... Sugar control B3.3.3 -blood glucose conc regulated by pancreas -produces insulin (moves glucose from blood into cells) and glucagon (converts glycogen to glucose to be released into the blood (only HT) - Type I diabetes-pancreas does not produce enough insulin & can be controlled by diet, exercise & injecting insulin. Temperature control B3.3.2 -mechanisms to maintain body temp (sweat, vasodilation/ constriction, muscle contraction) -body temp regulated by thermoregulatory centres in the brain (do not need to know the name-hypothalamus)- monitors temp of blood in brain and from temp receptors in the skin. Removal of waste and water control B3.3.1 -waste products to be removed from the body CO 2 and urea -kidney structure & function (nephron structure not required) -kidney failure, dialysis, transplantation -problems associated with transplantation (immune response & antigens) Test ‘urine’ for presence of glucose (i.e. test for diabetes)- clinistix Demo blood glucose testing Use surface temp sensors to monitor skin temp in different conditions Plan an investigation to measure the cooling effect of sweating Kidney dissection Design a model kidney dialysis machine using visking tubing What questions might you ask in this topic? What important terminology will there be in this topic... Homeostasis Osmoregulation Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) Kidney Filtration Ion Thermoregulation Glucose Insulin Glucagon Glycogen Pancreas Receptor Gland Transplantation Dialysis Diabetes AQA B3.3 Controlling internal conditions – Joe Ewen, Rebecca Timms and Rebecca Bartlett (Cheney School)
