5 Political development Mountainous terrain and islands both helped and hindered the development of city-states. – Protection – Isolation – Too many people, not enough land to spread out – Independence from other city-states – Competition for trade and land between city-states

6 Political development Greek cities were designed to promote civic and commercial life. – focus on government participation and the good of the city-state

7 Political development Colonization was prompted by overpopulation and the search for arable land. – Had to go to other places to get what they needed (LAND!!!!)
