Economic and social development Little/no agriculture (due to limited arable land) Commerce and the spread of Hellenic culture Shift from barter (exchange of goods) to money (currency) economy (use of coins)

Political development Mountainous terrain and islands both helped and hindered the development of city-states. – Protection – Isolation – Too many people, not enough land to spread out – Independence from other city-states – Competition for trade and land between city-states

Political development Greek cities were designed to promote civic and commercial life. – focus on government participation and the good of the city-state

Political development Colonization was prompted by overpopulation and the search for arable land. – Had to go to other places to get what they needed (LAND!!!!)
