Electroplating- The process of coating an electrically conducting surface with a thin layer (seldom more than 0.001 in [0.025 mm] thick) of metal by electrolytic deposition.
3
One use for electroplating is covering zinc with copper in making coinage. To Protect steel or other metals from rusting. Fore example metal bumpers on trucks. To Make cans which are made from steel electroplated with tin. Which is good for foods.
4
The process of electroplating causes redox reactions. We talked about redox reactions in class earlier. Which is an oxidation – reduction reaction. Cations and Anions also deal with electroplating because cations of most metallic substances can be reduced, this fact is exploited in electroplating. We learned about oxidation and reduction. This relates to electroplating because in the electroplating process oxidation is called Anode and reduction is called Cathode.
5
This is a metallic object that needs to be a plate with a metal. First it fills a cell with a solution of a salt of the metal to be plated. Most of the time the salt (nickel chloride in the example) is simply dissolved in water and a little acid.
6
An example of a gold-plating cell.
7
The spoon is being reduced and is attracting the oxidized Ag+ ions which plates the spoon in Silver atoms.
8
Name one use for electroplating. What is oxidation and reduction called in electroplating?
