3 Christmas  Before the date was decided for Jesus' birthday, Romans would celebrate Saturnalia, a holiday to honor the god Saturn.  Saturnalia begins a week before the winter solstice and continues the rest of the month.  During this month, everything is turned upside down. EX: servants become the masters.  Christmas is celebrated by 92% of the population, and 96% of the Christian religion.  The German immigrants brought Christmas to America.

4 Valentine’s Day  The origin is unknown, there are many different stories of how it came to be.  One of the stories is that there was a Roman priest, named Valentine, who would marry young couples, when Emperor Claudius II wouldn’t let young soldiers get married.  Another stories is that a man named Valentine was in jail and he fell in love with a young girl, but before he died he sent a message that was signed “From your Valentine”.  Valentine’s Day came to America by the British immigrants.

5 St. Patrick’s Day  St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated since the first days of this nation.  St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, even though he was really born in either Scotland or Roman England.  He had lived a normal life until he was kidnapped and sold as a slave in Ireland.  Six years after this he escaped and went to Britain, then France, where he became a bishop.  He went back to Ireland, where he converted the Gaelic Irish to Christians.  It is not a religious holiday, it is secular.  St. Patrick’s Day was brought here by the Irish immigrants.
